[Prof. Ted Shelton] ARCH 583: Advanced Design_Urbanism
This studio focused on the potentials and implications of an increasingly developer oriented model of architectural practice. The goal of this studio was to demonstrate that by increasing our role in the design/construction process that we as architects can increase our agency not only in a financially beneficial manner but also as critical thinkers with the ability to change our neighborhoods and cities in a positive way that responds to site specific needs rather than purely developer driven profit margins. We spent the semester developing a working knowledge of local zoning and planning practices while attempting to understand how they effect different areas of the city in sometimes unforeseen ways. The final project focused on using the International Residential Code to further decrease our need on outside influences like mechanical and structural engineers. The ultimate intent was to design a concept for an affordable place to live within the city that leverages our knowledge and skills as an asset to acquire funding for prospective projects.
